In that moment, looking at this amazing, busy bee-family, I realized that my honey bee journey would be filled with lessons from the hive. But, as I watched, I saw how much they lean on each other for input and decision making – the same way any good team does. Richard calls his daughter, Cindy, the boss. This man is doing something right!īeekeeping is a family affair for them. Five days a week he works at his Barbershop, and on Thursdays, his day off from cutting hair, he tends to his bees. And, as I inquired about how Richard stays so fit at the age of 81, he happily demonstrated to me his daily exercise routine. On the ride back, we exchanged stories about the benefits of bee pollen, propolis, and bee bread. Richard showed me the solar wax melter he uses to collect wax from old comb, which he then sells back to Dadant for credit on purchasing more foundation. Then, she quickly dumped the smoldering pine straw out from the smoker, tapping the glowing edges out as she’d done it a hundred times before. Sue carefully checked us over for bees before we got back into the van. They got to work smoking the bees and pulling off supers quickly, using a leaf blower to move bees out of the super, then placing each super into a garbage bag for the ride home to extract the honey. Cindy keeps a board groove-side-down over the top of half the hive, propped open for ventilation and she also tapes the seams of the boxes together where they meet. Cindy explained that this was a special request of the honey bees. (Take a look here if you want to learn more.) She went on to say that she torches the screens on the hives weekly, otherwise, the bees will wax it shut. The fields near Richard’s apiary were filled with stunning bouquets of Buckwheat. With a wide selection of table saws and more, you can count on Busy Bee Tools for your woodworking needs. We made a pit stop at Uncle Paul’s house before donning our outfits, gathering supplies and heading to the bee yard with Sue, Richard’s sister who had also joined us. Busy Bee Tools has the woodworking machines and tools that every serious woodworker is after. We loaded into his daughter, Cindy’s, van after a brief delay: I had arrived wearing dish gloves, not bee gloves, and this was cause for concern! (For me, it was just another laughable moment on my honey bee journey.) Fortunately, Richard saved the day with extra gloves on hand. I was beyond thrilled when he called and offered me the chance to “pull supers” with him and his family! Supers are where the bees put the extra honey in Langstroth hives. I let him know that I was interested in learning how he works in his apiary and that I would be happy to provide free labor in the hopes of picking up some tips. After gathering the courage to introduce myself. Weeks earlier, I had spotted his honeycomb for sale in the window of a local barber shop (where he is also the barber!).
